Default Best year/model silverado

Hey guys I'm new to this forum and am looking for some advice on buying a used silverado.

My budget is about $20,000. I've never owned a Chevy but am looking for something that will get me the most bang for my buck.

I'm pretty torn between buying a diesel (i've heard pre-2008 is the way to go) and a gas. I won't be hauling anything so either a 1500 or 2500.

I'd like to hear your opinions on what you think are the best years as far as power, mpg, common issues, etc.

Peter

I read in Car and Driver that the 2011 2500 HD Duramax was on their there list of "not to buys" - not the 2010 or the 2012 - just the 2011.

Does anybody have any idea why the 2011 is not as desirable as other years?? Any particular issues that would make you want to stay away them??

i have a gas 2500hd. love the truck but fuel mileage is awful. If you want gas go with the black widow edition silverado. lifted, tires, regearged, and all around nice. Or go with a 05-07 duramax. i personally thing the lbz dmax is the best overall.

my 2500 averages 14 mpg - first Chevrolet in a long time - other that stupid things like TPMS, ABS, traction control and a few other things I really like the truck and glad I bought a Chevrolet this time.

I have a '05 2500hd 6.0 crew/short bed 2wd auto. never have had a problem with her. PLENTY of power. just be prepared to camp at a gas station.

Like said, 05-07 Dmax with the LBZ motor is probably the most desired Dmax they've had so far, if you're lookin for gas, well pretty much all of them in a 1500 are gonna last forever and do good in the mpg market

I had a 2004 Silverado Z71 Stepside with 5.3. Great truck. I traded it for 11,500 in 2012 with 37K miles.

I have a 2004 1500 2wd. The 5.3L V8 puts out more than enough power, but it will pass anything on the road but a gas station.
