Default Brake problem

Hey everybody, just joined and need some help on a brake problem
My brake pedal vibrates and makes a noise and it won't stop the truck unless you put a lot of force onto the pedal. If you pump the brakes it will work fine. Today I was stopping at a stop sign and durn near ran out into traffic.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can you all point me in the proper direction please?
Thanks ahead of time.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you have completely used up your brake pads and the rotors are warped. they will need to be resurfaced or replaced depending on the damage along with new brake pads if thats the case.

It might be your fluid is low too, id check that first.

Question

Thanks for answering so quick.
When I drive it at speed limit and need to start slowing down for a stop ahead, there is no steering wheel pull, it runs just as true as can be. I also have no metal against metal sounds on my rotors. I'm a shade tree mechanic of sorts, I've overhauled diesel tractor motors, and am in the process of restoring a 52 ****** jeep. I've had the problem of the wheel rotors needing turned before, and this truck shows no signs of that.
It's the strangest thing that when you are going slow and hit the brakes the pedal kind of growls and you don't have any brakes. You can let off the pedal and pump it one time and then you have brakes. A friend of mine that told me it may be in the ABS system, but I am a green horn when it comes to the ABS system. Do you have anymore ideas?
Thanks again

It could be a vacuum leak too, I am sure someone else here will chime in that is more familiar with your problem, if its not your rotors.

This may not help, but if you have to pump the brakes, maybe the brakes need to be bled.

Hey Capp,

Welcome to the forums!

I'm with nauticstar87 on this one. Bleed the brakes, then see if the problem persists.

Default Brake problem

It might be the Check Valve on the Brake Power Booster, not permitting a good vacuum. Also check the hose that goes from the Check Valve to the Intake for cracks, dry rot, etc... In addition to the aforementioned items.

success,

Thanks guys, I'll get to work on all the answers and see what I come up with, if anybody else has had this problem, please chime in. This is kinda scary when it happens.

this happened to me not to long ago. i thought it was because my pads were completely done with. but when i popped the cap on my fluid, it was completely empty. im not sure how it got empty so fast. so check the fluid and bleed the brakes and hopefully it will turn out fine.

When I initially read the post I was thinking warped rotor but reading it again and reading your responses I think maybe you are describing is a ABS problem. If you are pretty sure it does not feel like a rotor/pad problem you can try this and see what happens. Pull all the fuses under the hood and in the truck fuse boxes labeled ABS then see if it still does it. If the changes nothing then it probably is warped rotors
