Can you swap the instrument cluster bulbs for LEDs?
I have a 98 Z71 and I want to swap out the instrument cluster bulbs with LEDs, but I'm not sure if you can change them without converting anything. This is also my first post on a forum of any kind so if you have any tips I would really appreciate them.
as a matter of fact. i has me a 98 skillverado and all you do is...
1) take trim off dash
2) unscrew 4 bolts holding the gauge cluster unit in
3) twist out old poopy incandescent bulbs and put in proper sized led bulbs
4) reverse order of previous steps
5) turn on lights make sure they all work right and your done. nothing to it. simple as a light bulb change.
side note...
if your lookin at ebay, and seeing the HID LED bulbs. dont believe them. they arent high intensity discharge theyre just led bulbs. if you get the pure white led's, it will still come out slighty blue tinted after installed. its normal. behind the face of teh gauge cluster is color film that was used to help disperse the yellowish light from the old bulbs and also remove the yellow and make it a little more white. so when you put in white led's it shows up blue.
side note numbah two...
dont get the single led style led. get the ones where you get a led facing up, and 4 facing out of the center. giving it a full 360 degree light output and also full 45 degree top spread making the light cover much better. ever see the other guys that use single led bulbs and you can tell where the led is located? on mine you cant tell anything because its full coverage all over.
