Does it feel like you forgot to push in the clutch. Can you drive it if you use 2 feet to start going? If you get it going does it stall as soon as you stop?

Have you done a basic tune-up?
Vacuum leaks on a truck this age are also common.
Third I would look at the carb.

I don't know if your truck would have a MAS Air flow sensor, But Similar situation would happen with my truck, is your check engine light on? If so pull the codes. Let us now the outcome.

bud of mine, lifted esploder. got trans overhauled, with used torque converter. one day realize that it would let go, or the lock out would not disengage. if he would hit the gas and let off the brake it would go backwards, but it was making a nasty sound. and then if that wasnt enough. we decide to drive in the middle of the night to some rock quarry. it wouldnt disengage so we put in neutral and it stalled. got home. after some fondling in the turn lane watching 3 cops just stare at us and drive on. well. torque converter was replaced. and i think the shift linkage, or either kick down cable or somethin with the linkage was also tweaked some. OH!!! when he took it to the trans place, they popped teh cover off and cleaned the solenoids some because the metal shavings were still in the trans lines and cooler from the first trans taking a ****. and so the coils on the solenoids collected metal and jammed. so yea. thats how we fixed that lockup issue.

a couple things could be causing it. torque converter, carb might need cleaned, You might try advancing the timing a bit.
