Default Carb and intake combos

I currently have an old Edlerbock performer series carb mounted to an old Edlebrock Scorpion TM-1 intake on top of a 86-90' chevy 350 with a 305 heads. I bought the truck with this engine set up, and I'm currently doing a rebuild. Despite my tight budget I don't want to put things back on that don't work well together. So is this current set-up good compatible set up, or are there suggestions for something better (w/ in a reasonable budget)? Also, there are some after market valve covers (which I'm probably going to replace because they're very narrow and the lifters are rubbing on one side) that don't quite fit with the manifold in place.

Keep the carb and intake you have and spend the money on better heads. After that, save more money and get a set of headers.
