Chevy 97 Cheyenne 2500 fuel guage problems

I have a 97 chevy cheyenne 2500 pickup with a 5.7l. The fuel guage reads empty in park and neutral then pegs to full when put in gear (doesnt matter what gear). Is the a guage problem, senor problem, or wiring problem?

Sounds like something shorting?ect. in the column gear shift

I checked all the wireing there everything seems to be fine? Could it be int he wire harness under the dash? I need a wiring diagram i guess

Have you looked on the transmission for any electrical connection or other possible problems?
