Default Clunky 4x4 engage/disengage

The vehicle is an 05 Silverado 4x4 with a 4L60E

When engaging or disengaging the 4 Wheel drive its very clunky. Like metal to metal. Into 4H 4L and back to 2H makes same noises.

when it is in 4x4 it works just fine tho

Is that normal normal for a 4x4?

I have a 99 z71 and I know exactly what your talking about. Mine and my friends 04 do the same thing it makes a "clunking" noise but it goes into each one with no problem and works like a charm. The only thing you might want to check is the u-joints on front axle because that can be the source of some of the clunking and if they do not than I believe it's nothing to worry about because mine has done it for years with no problems.
