I believe an insert it where you cut the honey comb grille part out and drill the billet in there to hold it in place. An overlay is something that just sits on top of the existing grille and bolts to the honey comb

Yes the overlay literally bolts over the existing grill. I have one on my truck and it looks great.

The inlay/insert requires some modification to the stock grill and cutting out the honeycombs like stated above.

Depending on your year there are also full on replacements that just snap and bolt in place

Depends. I have a overlay on my truck, but I cut the honeycomb out except for the part that it bolts onto. That way you can't see the honeycomb behind it, but it's much easier to install than the insert

As long as what is behind the overlay is all black you'll be fine and it'll look good. The good thing about the overlay grill is that you can always return to stock if you desire to (for instance, if you sell it). If you get the insert you can't go back to stock without buying a completely new grill.
