Default Driving a 98 Z71 in the snow, few Q's.

I've gotten some great info from you guys on the crew cab Z71 I just purchased so I thought I'd ask another quesiton. I picked it up yesterday afternoon just as the snow REALLY started to pile up on the roads here in VA. I tested the 4wd in a gravel parking lot last weekend on a test drive and it seemed to engage fine. I was disappointed with how the truck handled the snow. Even with me being very careful on the throttle the back end would step out everytime I started to move. Then traffic was stopped on an icy slope waiting for a genius in a Jaguar to try and get out the road and once he was out of the way it was all I could do to get up the hill after him. The tires are OK, not great but not worn out either. I guess I'm just looking for some opinions on how this thing should handle in the snow?

Thx for the input.

CB

It will do much better for you if you throw some sand bags in the bed for some weight.

Mhmmm, I've got 500lbs in the back of my 2wd. It helps a lot. I haven't had any traction issues yet.

I thought about that. I'm not overly concerned since we don't get alot of snow here worth mentioning I just thought it would have done a little better than it did. I must have gotten spoiled driving my Subaru AWD and Mazda AWD both with traction control. You just can't beat that setup for the snow.

With the right tires and some weight in the bed, it should do pretty well. You may have an open rear and the front is definitely open, a rear locker or limited slip really helps.

weight will help a lot..we use to pack snow in the bed for extra weight, and when it wormed up enough we would drop the tail gate, back up, stop short, and bed empty..

I grew up in the hills of KY and know exactly what you mean, however I don't believe there is anyway to really answer this question. You really need to learn from experience how to drive the truck in the snow, meaning when to give it brake, when it give it gas, and when to cut your losses and turn around and spend the night with grandma. The idea of piling weight in your bed does help tremendously though and if your pickup still has factory style tires on it you might want to consider going with something more rugged.

He has a 98, my 95 Tahoe had a rear limited slip before I locked it.
