Ethanol is a way for the big ag corps to sell more corn and make more money. Nothing green about using crop land to produce fuel instead of food. As more ethanol is produced the cost of grain has gone up in lock step and with it the prices paid for food.
Ethanol is hard on the engine and the 85% blend should only be used if your car has the yellow filler cap. With the poorer mileage and less power provided by ethanol it is a bad deal all the way around.
