we call it power-brakin down here. My 98 with a 5.0 will burn for a hundred feet without hittin the brake, so you must have a problem. Shifted into third with it still spinnin. I think it might be lack of experience. Is there a traction control button or something? Go down an abandoned road and do some practice. Hold the brake and give gas till it breaks loose and fry em.

Just be careful that the road doesn't have any ditches in the event that you (could possibly) lose control of it. I am willing to bet that you had traction control on and could only 'bark' the tires a little bit.

If burnouts are your thing, get the 6.0 with the 410 gears. Before I tweaked it, my truck was bust traction city, I couldn't keep the damn thing from squealin', barkin', patchin' out, I shudder to think what I'd have done to my tires if I'd really wanted to lay wheels. Mind you, this is stock, with single exhaust, before I got a CAI.

You may just be trying to hard. Try giving her less throttle, so she doesn't bog down.
