Hi japcpp,
Welcome to the Chevy forums.
First, pop your hood and check your radiator's overflow tank. Make sure the engine has cooled off first. There's every possibility it's just running a little hot because it needs water. Check your oil, or the next time you get gas, have the attendant check your oil to be sure you're not a quart or two low.
Call around, many parts stores will run a simple diagnostic for free.
A Haynes or Chilton's manual, available at most parts stores for @12.00, will probably pay for itself the first time you use it. They're designed with a beginning DIYer in mind.
My advice to anybody living in an out of the way area is always keep a gallon or case of water, a quart of oil, repair manual, tools, duct tape, rags or paper towels, and a couple metal coat hangers in a box in the back of the vehicle. Fortune favors the prepared.
