Default Help with Missing 97 5.7

New here. I had the truck scaned the shop said miss firing on number 1 and i need poppet replaced. I replaced the whole unit with the mpi unit my self last night. The truck still misses runs rough an laking of power. The ses light still flashes as i drive and not when idling. I have no cats on it and new cap rotor plugs wires rotor. Pulled the number one plug not sooty or oily. There is a rich exhaust smell in the garage that is very noticeable. I am at the end of my rope. Will the local auto parts scanner give the same code info as a high dollar shop one?

You need to recheck and then double check the spark plug wires at the cap and to the plugs... you most likely have a couple of wires out of place...

I changed wires around new coild new plugs even pulled plug wire and put new plug in and grounded it sparks. Can smell light raw fuel when running. With the 1 plug wire off there is no change in idel or anything. Can it be valves? Compression?

Yes but did you check to make sure the firing order is correct?
A wire running to the wrong plug will mis-fire and you will smell the unburnt fuel because the plug was not firing at the correct time....
If you can pull a plug wire off there is a good chance that the wires are misrouted because the mis-routing is in pairs....

if he had wires crossed, wouldnt he have 2 cylinder missfires? if your wires turn out fine try a compression test on the cylinder
