Default More power if possible

98 silverado, 5.7 Vortec, 2500 ext cab. anyone know how to get more ponies out of this baby without swapping the powerplant. Will a cam and lifters work? I heard No, something about the injectors in the intake wont supply enought fuel....... any idea would be helpful, thanks.

Cold air intake
Turbocharger will get you more power and better MPG
Adjustable cam sprockets with upgraded pistons
Larger throttle bodies
Big bore kit
Smaller tires like 245/70's
Go with headers instead of the restrictive stock manifold
True dual exhaust
LS1 engine
Regular use of seafoam or marvel mystery oil every other fillip
Restore engine lube with every oil change

I can keep going if you'd like

all of these will work...most people do the quick bolt ons like cold air intake, headers, exhaust, and a custom tune. those will wake it up big time. if you want to dig into internals, then a cam is in order

Ok, got that but again I heard that engine only has an injector in the intake and that it would not supply more fuel if I updated the cam and lifters, pls advise if anyone knows of this or a way around. Cold air, duals, headers, Got that to be done... and a custom tune, never heard of that, pls advise ... thks

Due to gas mileage quotas on cars and trucks your truck is tuned to get optimum gas mileage. So, their is more power in the engine and a retune done by one of the after market experts will get you more power along with a reprogramming of your transmissions shift points. One thing you can count on happening after all the work is your gas mileage will get worse.

stock injectors should be good for more horsepower than that'd put out but you can upgrade the injectors to supply more fuel no problem. I'd look into it if you think it's necessary. Custom tune via blackbear, wheatley or a local dyno shop. Dyno tunes get you the best gains out of any tune. Headers are goin to wake your truck up pretty good to as your manifolds on your truck are very very restrictive. Not like the 2000 and up versions

I agree with the above responses. Stock injectors should be good for quite a few more ponies, not familiar with the injectors on the 5.7, but most are rated by normal fuel pressure, so up the pressure and up the supply. I got this off another site.

Injector HP ratings: divide flow rating by.5 and multiply the result by the number of injectors. This uses a 100% duty cycle. These ratings are for naturally aspirated engines.

Example:
19/.5 = 38, 38 x 8 = 304 HP
24/.5 = 48, 48 x 8 = 384 HP
30/.5 = 60, 60 x 8 = 480 HP

The preferred duty cycle is about 85% maximum, so for a safety factor multiply the final figure times .85.

304 HP x .85 = 258 HP
385 HP x .85 = 326 HP
480 HP x .85 = 408 HP

Remember that the above ratings are at 39 PSI. Increasing the pressure will effectively increase the flow rating. Example: a 19 lb injector will flow 24 lbs at 63 PSI, and a 24 lb injector will flow 30 lbs at 63 PSI.
What type of power are you looking to get? Long tube headers and duals and a nice RV cam will wake her up at lower RPMs. Call comp cams and they should be able to suggest a cam for your needs.

A good tune on a dyno would be worth the price also. You can hand port the heads or send them out or go to performance heads. The limit is your pocket book.
