Not sure why he needed a new engine at just 100K miles. The Chevy small-block V8 is good for a lot more than that. Nevertheless, if it really is a new or rebuilt engine, your truck's life may have just been extended a bit. Be sure to make sure the transmission is in good shape, check the other obvious maintenance items and let a qualified mechanic give the truck a once-over before you pull the trigger.

I have a 2004 5.3L Silverado LS -- but it is just a 2wd version (Z85 package). I have 118k on mine and it runs like a champ. Fuel mileage is about 15 local and maybe 18 or 19 on the highway. I have the 17-inch Z71 wheels and the optional 3.73:1 rear axle (part of the towing package) -- so it's never going to get the fuel economy of a Prius.

That's why I have a little Nissan Sentra that I use for commuting, as driving my truck everyday would put me in the poor house.

Good luck!!

If you can get the receipts for the motor to see who built it for your records and all of the maintenance checks out, you can't go wrong. And like JK23112 said, those motors are good for a lot more miles. I get pretty darn close to the same fuel mileage too.
