Default p1345

i have a p1345 code on a 98 k2500 pickup. the distributor is tight as are the ckp and cmp. it will only start if a battery charger is hooked up (even though the battery is new) and runs like crap once started.

any help or advice is much appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. The CMP sensor may not be getting the full battery voltage. Take the electrical connector off and then measure the voltage across terminal C (ignition feed, PNK wire) and terminal A (sensor ground, PNK/BLK wire) with key on.

Did you have the distributor out for any reason?

the voltage is 11.27 at the connector...with the charger on it, it jumps to 14v +. is 11.27v too low?

the distributor hasn't been out but did put new cap and rotor on a while back would that have anything to do with it?

Why is it that low? It probably is dropping way low while cranking, thus the need for a boost. You either have a battery problem, or something is draining the battery.

P1345 means CMP sensor 1X signal problem in relation to the CKP sensor signal and thus the distributor that's installed wrong, or worn distributor gear for that matter, can cause that. 11.27V is kind of low and makes me wonder what else is getting starved for voltage. What's the voltage at the 20A ENG1 fuse under the hood, measured against the battery negative terminal with key on? Anyway, check the distributor gear, too.

I'd suggest chase the voltage issue first. The cap and rotor will only go on one way, he said he didn't remove the distributor. It could certainly be more than one problem.

the battery is at 14.14v while running. I have tried a different battery in it also and still the same problem.

voltage at 20A ENG1 is 11.67

is the only way to check the distributor gear is to pull the distributor?

Yes, before you do, check the timming first.
