I just bought a 2007 Classic Silverado a few months ago and I am on my second power steering pump. The first one howled and now the second one makes some sort of a swooshing noise whenI accelerate (not moving the steering wheel). This noise is only present after the engine has warmed up to 200 degrees. GM says that's normal, I don't think so. Any ideas as to the problem and potential solution?

 

Check to make sure the fluid is at the proper level. That could cause your swoosh. Let it warm up and see if their are any air bubbles in the fluid. If their is they didn't bleed the system. It could also be that the pump is just speeding up. How loud is it?

 

If there is air in the sytem, it can cause noise. There is a procedure to bleed the power steering system.

Loose connections may not leak, but may allow air to enter the system. Check for loose connections.

Check to be sure that no hoses are touching the frame, engine, or body. They can transmit and amplify noises.

 

It's loud at low speeds. Loudest when I step on the accelerator from a dead stop and when I come to a dead stop not stepping on the accelerator. When I stop it is a wisp sound. I've never heard anything like it.

Ididn't see air bubbles in the reservoir and the fluid seems to be at the right level.

 

yea bleeding procedures, take the cap off and move the steering wheel back and fourth WOW

 

Actually, it's a little moreinvolved than that. The first thing it says is: "DON'T turn the wheel lock to lock."

 

I say it depends on how you want to bleed it? If you have a hydraulic booster for your brakes and a line to the fan clutch it get's fun.

 

I'm not a mechanic and assume I have standard equipment. Even with no air bubbles, I still need to bleed it?
