Default Rear brake inspection

I just inherited a 1987 Silverado 3/4 ton diesel crew cab. After removing the rear tireI noticed that the brake drum and axle end flange are bolted together and a form-in-place seal is seen squeezed out of the joint. It appears that I have to remove the rear floating axle just to inspect the brakes. Is there a quick way to do this inspection? I can peek through the backing plate holes and see the self-adjusters are not near their limit but I would be more comfortable seeng the brakes and drums. How do I easily inspect the rear drum brakes?

Anyway, at some point I will need to replace the shoes and would like to know the procedure to remove the rear drums. Input or pictures would be appreciated.
