Shift Position Sensor?

Hi folks,
I recently picked up a 2003 4.8 Silverado Z71. Runs great, lots of fun in the mud. Though the problem is, after yesterday's mudding tour, the shift highlighter on the digital on the dash would not be in the correct position immediately after shifting (p, r, n, d.. doesn't matter which gear). After 3-5 seconds it does switch and display the correct gear. Sometimes there will be no gear highlighter, others it will stay on one of the gears passed on the way to the selected gear. (Displays R after shoft from P to D).
So, it was quite a muddy day, is it possible that something just needs a cleaning? or is something broken? Its fine now, but could it effect driveability down the road?
Thanks for any advice to a clear newbie,
Mike
