Default Starter question.

Alright, now I know this'll sound like a stupid question, but I feel a need to ask. I got a 92' chevy K1500 4X4 with a 305. I just put a new starter in it cause I knew the old one was getting a lil' worn. My old starter was a smaller version from Wilson. Anyways, I got a Delco-remy starter from the autoparts store and installed the starter in the driveway at home instead of going down to the shop today and swapping them out. I risked it and didn't put any shims in.It's starting up fast and fine. Doesn't seem like the starter is hanging up on the flywheel and it seems to be making good contact. My main question is, is it easy to hear and tell if the starter is grinding against the flywheel? I mean I'm not use to cranking the ignition for like 2 seconds and having the truck fire up. You can clearly hear the starter working This starter is so much stronger than my lil' Wilson that I had in it and the starter motor is much louder than the small Wilson version. Thanks in advance.

You will hear it if it needs shims.

Alright, thanks, that's kinda what I figured. I'm just not use to such a strong and louder starter.
