Unhappy Starting problem with no DTC.

22 Oct 24
2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 Ext cab (4Dr) with 5.3 ltr engine. 87000 original miles Automatic transmission.

I've had this truck since 2002. It has only about 87000 miles on it. It's always ran like new and I take good care of it. I've replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator three times when it had a rough idle / hard start. That always fixed the condition and the truck ran like new again.

I park the truck outside and seldom drive it. My wife has a Honda Pilot - the family car - and I have an 04 Corvette and we keep both in the garage. The truck is a great back up and we use it to pull a trailer if needed.

A couple weeks ago I went outside and tried to start the truck and it gave me the same rough idle and engine dying condition as I've had in the past. So I bought a new Fuel Pressure Regulator again and installed it but the condition persisted.
I used my OBDII and ran a check for DTCs and it showed a "pending" code of P0336. Crank Shaft Position Sensor. There are tests available to determine if the sensor is bad or not and a new sensor was $42.00 so I opted to simply replace it with a new one.

This is a very involved process. I had to remove the starter to get access to the sensor mounted in the engine block. This is tricky. The passenger side wheel must be removed, the inner fender splash guard must be pulled down and forward to gain limited access to the starter wires. No room for the wrench so it's a trick to get the wire nuts loose and remove the wires. If the wires are not removed, you can't move the starter far enough forward to get to the sensor.

Removing the sensor was easy enough and installing the new one was a breeze. Reinstalling the starter and wires and the inner fender splash guard and retainers was a chore.

I then reattached the battery cable to the battery and tried starting the engine. Same condition as before. I attached the OBDII again but now there was NO code displayed. So I guess the P0336 DTC was fixed.
I had to keep restarting the engine and eventually it idled OK, but not really good.

Somewhere I read that you need to "Re Learn" the new sensor. There are various methods but most involve driving the truck for about 1/2 hour at 45- 55 mph. after it warms up. Suggestions ???

If I got a DTC for anything after this repair, I'd feel better because I'd know what was wrong. As it is, I'm stumped.
I really don't want to crawl under the truck to remove the starter again. I'm in my mid 70's and I'm getting a bit too old to keep doing this. I suppose that if this happened while driving the truck, it would be easier to understand. This happened while sitting still for a couple weeks in the side yard in the Arizona heat. It was running great - then it wasn't.

If anyone has a similar situation (with No DTC) to mine, please reply and head me in the right direction. I have the OBDII and a Foxwell NT301 diagnostic tool / tester.

Thanks,

Really.. ???

225 views and not a single reply. I thought for sure someone had a similar problem and could suggest hot to Relearn the crankshaft sensor at least.....

1. is it a gm part? they can be picky sometimes.
2. did you clean any surface rust off to ensure it sits where it should.
