Default Transfer case?

I have a 2000 Silverado ext cad Z71 4X4 with push button 4X4. When i engage the 4X4 in high or low you can hear the trnafer case engage but the front wheels will not pull. If its on the lift and there is no load on the front wheels they will turn until a load is applied. Any ideas on what could be the cause of this. I bought the truck used with about 100,000 mi on it. A teenage boy had it before me and didnt treat it very nice.

What fluid did you put in thetransfer case,, should have been Autotrak,,not ATF. Sounds like the clutches, yes it has em, burned up.
