Ok, bought the truck. Comparing a 4.8 4x2 and the new truck 6.0 vortec max 4x4. Both 3.73. After taking camper to dealer and hooking up to the potential truck. While towing the camper, the new truck got almost the exact milage as the 4.8 towing the camper. 9 mpg @ 55, 8.4 mpg @ 60 and 7.5 mpg @ 65. But the towing is a huge difference. Know its there, but it towed like a dream.

not to bag on chevy but the new superduties are bad ***, and to add to your "bigger gears, brakes etc." if u get a 4x4 they have a solid axle front end so it can handle almost anything and the rear pumpkin is massive. the 6.7 diesel averages around 17mpg-21mpg. a co-worker of mine has one.
i cant figure out y were talking about ford's on a chevy forum tho hahahaha

Default Gorillllllla!

I am going to sound like the 800 pound Gorilla in the room but,I paid 2000 bucks for my 1994 454 c6p,4L80E,and every tow option available with 157,000 on it.I have about 7000 pounds of rock in it right now and am hauling it tomorrow. The rear suspension has barely moved with that much weight in the rear.Yeah,it doesn't look new,it IS a Silverado trim package, the paint isn't perfect,I have put a starter on it,an oil change(7quarts),and an oil sending unit.I have had the truck 1 month. The oil pressure is at 50 pounds hot.I have also been having a war with the A\C bleeding out.Outside of those AGE problems this thing is a beast.I am getting about 12-13 on the highway loaded. The PO used it for a Horse trailer so it has a third wheel hook in the bed. From all I read read and heard on 8 Chevy truck forums THIS setup is THE setup for towing or hauling. For an 18 year old truck I find the value amazing(so far)The fuel mieage notwithstanding. It also has an Airaid throttlebody spacer and a K&N 4"x14" canister on it.Which I would imagine helps a little in the mileage category.

Why not simply pay to change out the rear end for 4.10 gears. That will give your truck the ability to handle the trailer load. You may lose 1/2 MPG overall but that is trivial compared to the cost of a new truck.

I would not even think about a 4-speed. The 6-speed trans provides 2 overdrive gears and does help gas mileage.

For my part I have always bought trucks and SUV's with the 4.10 rear end to be able to pull up to their rated capacity. This rated capacity with Chevy trucks does ignore the brakes which have historically been undersized.

With a baby to consider and a good truck whose condition and care you know first hand, a new truck is the last thing to even think about. No way you can come out ahead dollar wise.

i have an 04 2500HD with the 6.0L it tows great i use it for towing my tractor with weights a good 7000 plus the trailer which is another 1200 so a total of 8200lbs is the most ive ever towed with it and it does good, even going down the highway going sixty five it was all good. when your not towing it gets 11 mpg

yeah, the 6.0 definitely likes to drink! But, Since I only drive 8k a year. The fuel is really not as big a deal as having the ***** to pull a house, literally.

My only wish is that I didn't have that stupid Auto 4x4. Since I have the AUTO option, I can't use the gear vendors overdrive system as my transfer case doesn't have a seperatable rear housing for their kit. Ohh Well!!!
