Weird Starter issue
Hello all.
I have a 2001 sierra 1500 with a 5.3L and it has a strange starter motor issue.
It only happens when it's below freezing.
When it's cold outside it turns over fine but the starter never releases.
Above freezing it works fine and no weird starter noises.
Local shop says, "just put a new starter in it"! Parts and labor, $425.00

If ,,,that is the original starter, it might be a good move to replace it with a rebuilt unit.
If it is not that old , ,,good chance some lube on the bendix drive internal bushing could get rid of the problem.

Thanks guys.My buddy Dave showed up just after I posted this with his boss' ramp truck and we used his lift and heated garage.
Dropped the starter and the grease on the shaft and drive looked like dog crap and twice as stiff! Dave said, "while we're here let's
give it a real clean and lube"! Nose bushing was a bit worn so we replaced that. He broke out some moly lube designed for extreme
temps both hot and cold. Big test will be in the morning. Single digits here in NC again tonight.
Hope it works. Really don't want to give the local NAPA $250 for a new starter since the other 2 stores don't even have one in stock.
Fingers Crossed! LOL!
BTW, the starter is way easier than a blend door motor!
