Please help.... Stuck in Northern Sask with no 4wd in my 1996 GMC Sierra Z71 Diesel. I had been using the 4wd, but had disengaged it (the light went out). I was going about 100kmph, heard a nasty whirling noise, started to slow down and then heard a VERY NASTY bang. Ever since my 4wd hasn't worked (the light still comes on).

You will not know for sure untill you tear front pig apart but it sounds like your pinion/and or ring are messed up. You might need a new ring or pinion. But it could be anything. Won't know for sure without looking.

Thanks Suzuki Guy!
After my intial shock I figured it was probably that front diff. I figure if I engage the 4wd and crawl under, can't turn that drive shaft by hand it eliminates the transfer case (I'm just waiting for it to get light). Is there anything else that I should look at while I'm under there to help isolate the problem.... or is it time to open up that diff?
