01 Tahoe E-Brake

01 Tahoe E-Brake
My 2001 Tahoe has 66K miles on it, and the last thing on my list of things to repair on it to pass inspection is the e-brake.
The e-brake is not holding, and I'm pretty sure it just needs to be tightened. The cables are fine, everything is connected, and I hear the parts moving/working at the rear.
I see the adjustment in the middle of the cable under the car, just past the driver side door, but it is at the max.
The e-brake has been rarely used, and at only 66K miles, I have doubt that the e-brake shoes are shot...
Is there another way to adjust the e-brake cable?

RE: 01 Tahoe E-Brake
The cable that you are referring to is the connection point between the front and intermediate cables and it is not adjustable.
If you remove the rear rotors there is an adjustment screw for the park brake shoes that is very similar to a normal rear drum brake setup.
There were some problems with the rear park brake staying properly adjusted; GM has released an updated Parking Brake Shoe Kit P/N 88982875 and also a Parking Brake Retainer Spring Clip Kit P/N 88982879 that will prevent this problem from reoccurring.
Proper shoes/drum clearance is 0.026"
Do not press the brake pedal or apply the e-brake with a rotor removed.

RE: 01 Tahoe E-Brake
I had the same problem on a 2002 Z71. The park brake shoes were worn out and damaged the inner park brake drum which was fixed using the kit ZX mentions above.
I was shocked since I never use the parking brake.
If you take it to the dealer to have the repair done, they might foot some or all of the bill since this was not your fault (if you talk nice to them). Chances are that they will also have to replace the rear brake rotors too.
Good luck!
