04 Chevy tahoe gear shift problem

04 Chevy tahoe gear shift problem
I got into my Tahoe, went to put the gear shift from park into drive, and it went just loose. Now the entire gear shift is lose, what could be the problem, please help

This happened to my 03 Trailblazer several years ago. Rather than buy a cable and take the console apart and feed it through the floor, I drilled out the lever on the transmission amd the cable end and put in a shoulder bolt,. Worked fgreat and was stronger than the original.
