There is a resonator right near the end of tail pipe. However, I have heard from a few people removing it doesn't really make any sound difference. You may be better off getting an aftermarket exhaust for a few hundred dollars instead of removing the muffler entirely.
Removing the resonator doesnt do very much besides appearence...and an a nice way for some sound is replacing the muffler and cutting off the resonator...if you look at most aftermarket kits they are pretty much selling you replacement piping with the same bends, a tip, and a new muffler....my solution was to cut off the resonator, add a new tip, and replace the muffler...only cost me a little more than $200, opposed to $500+ a catback kit. I could be wrong, but i have done it, and im extremely happy with the results.
which muffler did you go with? & tip? did you buy online or in person?
thanks,
oh and how about if i cut off the muffler & leave the resonator?
that should sound pretty good?

I have no idea how that would sound. I feel like there would be a loud "drone" inside the car if you did that. If you want, you could try cutting out the muffler and leaving in the resonator. Then if you don't like it you can have a muffler installed. It seems like you're trying to save some money by not buying any new components, but it may end up costing you more if you need to have them lift your car twice to install a muffler on the second try.
I bought both mine in person...i first went to the muffler shop and cut the resonator off and added a tip...im not sure who made it, but it was just a tip which the guy recomended for me...just a long chrome tip maybe the cut was 15 degrees (not positive)....this was about $65....removing the resonator didnt do to much, just let it breathe a little better. I then went back and cut out the muffler, and added the Magnaflow 4x9 oval (not sure of the length), but the guy there said they all sound about the same. That cost me about $135. So alltogether its around $200. Not bad for considering they charge you about $550 for an entire kit which you already pretty much have half the kit.
As far as cutting out the mufflr and leaving the resonator...i dont see the point. I assume you just want to cut off the muffler and add some new piping where the muffler was. Im pretty sure you loose some torque in the lower rpms (i would check this out, not positive), and you would still have the awful looking resonator sticking out the rear of your truck. But as far as just sound, probably a cheaper route to go. I definently recomend the route i went, or if you have the money buy a new catback kit.

I have a question Has any noticed a drop im MPG? I cut off my Resonators on my wifes Magnum and lost 2 miles per gallon, lost back pressure which changed the torque curve and it did not shift into 4 cly mode as often. Turned out Dodge did alot of homework on tuning the stock exhaust system to work with the cyl depleation. Sounded good but at $3.00 a gallon not worth it.
