Default '08 Tahoe gas tank door spring broke off...

I was just filling up my tank ($89!) and the pump broke off the clip to the right of the tank opening that allows the gas tank door to pop open/closed.

Now the door is inverted. I called the Chevy dealership and they want an hour and $60.00 to fix it.

I have two questions

1) Can I open the door without scratching the paint? And how?

2) Since I haven't attempted to solve #1 and closed the door so I can't see how the clip attaches - Can I install the clip myself?

Sorry if this has been posted already, I tried searching but this clip (for $60 it should open my tank and fill itself) might have a name I can't find!

Welcome to the forum.

I doubt that you can get the "clip" by itself. Best bet is a salvage yard and get the whole assembly.

I misunderstood what you were referring to. I believe you are talking about the rubber covered, spring loaded gizmo that pops the door open. If so, pretty sure you should be able to buy that separately.

The door hinge works on a fulcrum of sorts so you only need use something soft/rubber non metal to get under the door and lift it up and it should work as normal. The gizmo just gives the assist to get the door high enough so your finger can do the same...

Unfortunately the picture below does not feature the gizmo...

The assembly just snaps in place. I replaced the one on my daughter's suburban. Around 20 bucks for part. 2 minutes for installation. I think the stealerships have a 1 hour minimum.

Any idea what the part number is for the "gizmo?" I think it's item number 11 in in2pro's post.

I just bought the spring at the dealership $10, and once you remove the old spring assembly, you just slide the new one thru the slot and it clips into place...very simple. Removing the old one took the most time...had to break off the plastic clips on top and bottom, then it slid right out. literally only took minutes to do the entire job, that the dealership wanted $90 to do.
