Default 10W30 Synthetic at 4400 miles?

I changed my oil at 1500 miles with regular 5W30. Inow have 4400 miles and was going to go 5W30 synthetic blend but my dealer only has 10W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic. Is it ok to put that in at 4400miles or should I stick with 5W30? I live in Houston, Texas where it may freeze once or twice a year. Thanks!

Your are OK using 10W30 in Houston but try to use 5W30 whenever possible.

I wait until 10K miles before going synthetic.

There is no reason to wait to switch to synthetic, most performance vehicles come factory filled with synthetic oil.
It is an urban legend that synthetic oil is so slippery that it does not allow a motor to break-in properly.

So what part of the truth is it that you never put synthetic in an older engine that doesn't have a leak at this point? I have a 2000 Tahoe with 140,000 miles on it with no leaks. Is it a bad idea to switch at this point?

Thanks... G..

On an engine with that many miles it would probably be of little benefit to switch to synthetic at this point but it certainly wouldn't hurt anything and if you don't have any oil leaks now you won't if you switch to synthetic oil either. Over the years there has been a lot in the way of folklore conjured up against synthetic oils probably most of it in an attempt to discredit any advertised benefits to rationalize and ease the minds of people who either choose not to use it or can’t afford it however synthetics are superior to conventional oils in virtually every conceivable way.

OK..I changed my regular oil at 1500miles. Now I have 4500 miles and normally, I change the oil in cars every 3000-3500 miles. Well, I am there but the oil indicator says I still have 50% of oil life left. I only drive 5-6 miles total a day to and from work and to and from the gym during the week and just around town on the weekends. Should I stick with changing oil at 3500 miles or follow the meter. I am sticking with regular 5W30 for at least one more change before going synthetic.

I believe ZX has previously indicated that change at 50% w/ mineral and at 100% w/ synthetic.
