Default 12v outlet overheated started fire?

Has anyone else seen this email going around? My 80yo mother forwarded it to me
Here is the text of the email... I think I will make it a point to not leave anything plugged in from now on...

Pictures say a thousand words.

Attached are pictures of what remains of our 2007 Suburban. We are all okay but I wanted to warn everyone not to make the same mistake I did. This fire resulted from leaving an iPhone charger/docking station plugged into the car outlet. It overheated and started a fire, while parked in our garage. PLEASE unplug anything you have in your car outlets once you turn off your car!
We were VERY fortunate that we found the fire, at 11pm, before going to bed and before it spread to the house. None of our garage heat detectors or house fire alarms went off (another item to take care of on my “to do” list). Feel free to pass this along to anyone you want. Better safe than sorry.

Oh...jeeeeeeze!!!

A friend sent this one to me a couple of years ago. I still had the '93 Suburban and didn't even think about it.

Now I've got the '07, and have gotten into the habit of leaving my cell phone plugged in, if the battery is low, for a couple of hours after I get to work. No more of THAT!!!

Thank you for the reminder.

Snopes says undetermined. I'm trying to figure how leaving a charger plugged could cause this. Even if the charger shorted, it should blow the fuse.

No, chances are it's not the shorted charger but the device itself. I actually had a cellphone that literally started smoking while on the car charger. After that, I don't look at anything that contains lithium-ion batteries the same.

I agree, I think you would win the Powerball before that happened.

I would say some homemade wiring job, bypassing the fuses.

I overlooked the fact that it was an Apple iPhone. Seems I remember hearing about them having some battery problems previously.

There's a good reason why the US Navy doesn't allow Lithium on subs.

This has been around a few years, you clearly can see the 12v outlets are undamaged and the claim is just the charger/docking station plugged in, no iPhone involved, therefore no battery to heat up. Any shorts would/should have blown fuses.

If SabrToothSqrl has seen this, he's busy plugging in his iPhone charging unit...after first moving the Tahoe away from the house.

Default if only

lol, problem is the insurance company will only give you "current market value".

I've thought of crashing it, but 1. i dont want to get hurt. 2. I don't want to go to jail.

Anyone remember the ford hot circuit cruise control fires? the expedition I think would burst into flames and burn your house down...

Why the hell would the cruise control circuit be hot if the car is OFF?!

I felt for the home owners because the car insurance company said they wouldn't cover the house, and the homeowners company said because the car caused it, they wouldn't cover it.

you spend your life paying premiums, then when you need it, they are all like screw you, not our problem.

but I digest (Family guy reference).
