thanks for the help guys. been up and running for a couple of weeks now and all seems well.
I wound up replacing both the pump and the entire sending unit which includes the harness that ZX mentioned. my chevy dealer gets $65 for just the connector. for another $35, the entire sending unit was a no brainer, not to mention the sending unit had been in and out of the tank 8 times already.
through a little research afterwards, I found that Carter Fuel Pumps sells a replacement harness for this problem. part # 888-536. $13 from Summit Racing and no splices necessary. all connectors already assembled for you. GM has some nerve, $65 and you have to splice it together.
thanks again for the help.

Default RE: 1997 tahoe eats up fuel pumps

Hi to all, newbi.I have 1996 tahoe had it about a year Would run fine if you drove it every day. After sitting 2or3 days fuel pump would run alot and hard to start.Missing and back firing.Put new GM fuel pump in and run good for a little while.Started popping and cracking.Come to find out it had never had a fuel filter replaced.Replaced and cut old one apart full of dirt and rust.Run good for 1/2 tank of fuel.On my 20 mile drive to work it sputtered about 10 sec.and cleared up same thing 1/2 way back home.No check engine light.I started it 2 days later let it run in drive 20min.it died and like to have never got it to start.Took to a buddy's shop and shut it off and would not start. The service engine soon light came on.Next 3 days he started it and run fine. The next day it would not hit a lick.Code was random miss fire.He checked fuel pressure,Fine ,Very little fire out of plug wires.Any help would be great!!!!!Thanks in advance. Also the wires and cap have been replaced.Snap on scanner only had the 1 code.

Might pull the new filter and cut it up. If dirty, then the tank is probably full of crud and needs to be dropped and cleaned. []

That's weird I had the same problem for the past 8 months. Replace the fuel pump twice, the fuel filter 3 times andthe wiring from underneat the truck. Nothing worked. Finally I discovered that in the fuse compartement under the wood there is a relay for the fuse pump. When I took it out I saw that underneat one leg was black like if they where cause by sparks. I started my tahoe and took a closer look at the relay. I't seem like every time I shake the relay box , sparks come out the relay. I removed the original relay and bypass it completly whit a normal 5 pin bosh relay and all the original wiring. Never add a problemsince and I'm thinking that I never had a fuel pump problem just a relay problem.

Hope this help!

Default 1997 tahoe fuel pump

I am trying to figure out right now whether another fuel pump has gone out on my tahoe. It is sitting in a parking lot right now. I am trying to rule out. I was reading one of the posts about the vacuum. i had lost my gas cap and had'nt replaced it for months. Also, at one point someone told me not to fill the tank full because of something with the fuel pump. It would be hard to start. I never filled it for years. Recently I gave my son the tahoe, filled up the tank and replaced the gas cap. Four days later it left him by the side of the road. Could it be anything besides the fuel pump? Relay or fuel filter? Any response would be helpful

When you turn on the ignition do you hear the fuel pump spin up?
if the pump is spinning up is probably good...
Have you replaced the fuel filter?
Checked for pressure?
what did the tank look like when you replaced the pump last time?
Was the replacement after market or OEM?

Over filling will cause check engine lights but should not affect starting or running

Default hoping it isn't fuel pump again

The fuel pump has been replaced twice since I bought the car. The last guy who replaced it was a mobile mechanic. I don't know what it looked like. I bought a fuel pump relay switch today and a fuel filter. Not installed yet. I can't really tell whether the fuel pump is turning. I guess I don't know what i am listening for. I just don't want taken to the cleaners. I was looking on line for fuel pumps. They seem to be alot cheaper. It seems you can buy it without assembly. Is it necessary or can you use the old ones. (I'm a female, all new to me)

When you first turn the key to start but don't crank with the drivers door open you should hear a motor come on and run for a few seconds.. that is the fuel pump priming and building pressure...if you don't hear that come on then it is probably the pump, relay or fuse....

Had the same problem with 3 pumps. check fuel pump relay under the hood for carbon build up. relay block connection may be damaged beyond repair if so add aux relay plug to side of relay block. I didnt know about the new wiring harness at the time so I removed pump and soldered heat srinked the connections. think I put a connection outside tank 2 dont remember why GOOD LUCK
