Default 1999 454 suburban ok to tow in overdrive?

Hey guys,

Just checking from your experiences. I have a 99 3/4 ton 454 Suburban. 4:10 posi rear... I wil be towing my 71 Cuda to the drags. Open trailer (equipment type trailer) Probably 6000-7000 lbs max with car on trailer.

Manual says ok to leave it in overdrive. However I want real world answers to that. I don't want to fry the tranny. Danka.

start in overdrive, if it keeps shifting down to go up a small incline or if it cannot keep highway speed then drop it down a gear. I imagine with the 454 and 4:10 rear end you would be good in overdrive.
they key is you don't want it to keep shifting because that generates lots of heat when towing

Download it to ur PC then upload to this thread.

If you have a tranny temp. gauge, I'd watch that. Also an aux. tranny cooler will help.

do you have a trans temp guage?

it's all gonna depend on the weight and terrain... I would leave it in overdrive until you notice it hunting gears, and then drop it into 3rd... you should be good to go there...

least thats what I'm doing with my suburban (5.3 L60) since my tow/haul switch doesn't seem to work...

Looks like an all-stock, numbers matching machine to me. Very nice!
