Default 1999 Tahoe - problem at start up

So this morning, I went to start my 99 Tahoe, and upon turning the key all I got was a loud whining/higher pitch whirring sound--no cranking from the starter, no engine attempting to turn over. All power items came on fine, but no engine. After waiting a moment and trying again, I got the usual starter cranking noises and it started up.

It just did the same thing this afternoon. It started on the third or fourth try, so it's getting a little tougher.

Anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like the starter is going Tango Uniform, probably the Bendix.

Thanks, I sort of figured. Any reason to think it's just the solenoid, or is it probably the starter itself?

Thanks

Could be the solenoid but you have to remove the starter to get to it. (I think) Might as well do both while you're in the neighborhood.
