Default 1st Oil Change

Gents,

Well I have 3000 miles on my Tahoe and am thinking it is time for it's first oil change. I am thinking Mobil 1 5-30 full synthetic. Should I be switching so soon from Dino oil? I am also thinking of not taking it to the dealer and taking it to one of those drive in Mobil places? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Scott

My personal thoughts here is that the 1st oil change should always be done by the dealer. This way, they can look at the undercarriage/under-engine, etc... and make certain that all is the way it should be. I do this for all of my new cars.

You think they really look at it anymore than any other mechanic?

Chevy Service told me don't have to change oil until calculated oil life is low <40% or so. I put 6000 on my Tahoe b4 I got to this point. Any thoughts? Go back to 3000 mile changes?

What about oils? Mobil 1? I think on the first it is important to dump sooner than you normally would.

I thought the Tahoe was supposeed to tell you when to change the oil? Or even the ONSTAR? My first oil change is free from my dealer.

Dave has said that your first oil change should be made no later than 3,000 miles! There are to many particles in the oil from the new engine. He has said the first oil change you shouldnt go by the remaining oil life %. There is an entire thread on this some where in the tahoe section!

Mobil 1 was also the recommended oil. Read the thread it has the exact info you are looking for!

In a earlier post ZX recommended that the first oil change be done at 1500 miles than again 3000 miles later. FWIW I dont trust my oil and filer going over 3000 miles anyway. Oils and filters are cheap insurance considering what I paid for this thing and how long I plan to drive it. The dealer is doing my first change for free but after that I plan to do all my changes. I think I will take a better look underneath than the mechanic. Mobil 1 is supposed to be a great oil an an ac/delco filter.

I changed my oil at 1000 miles and again at 3000. It goes in at 5K for the "official" dealer oil change. The oil was quite dirty at 1K and 3K, so I see benefit in frequent changes early on. After 5K I'll probably go in to the dealer every 5K-7K for a change. I run Mobil 1 5W30 so I could probably go to at least the indicated change interval on the oil life monitor, but oil/filter replacements are cheap insurance.

Based on my 60/40 hwy/city driving the oil life monitor looks like it will trigger somewhere around 9K miles. Not sure I'll ever go that far, even with M1. I do tow on occasion and the RPM increase running in 3rd drops the oil life a lot faster....more revs = less miles.
