Default 2001 Suburban Check Engine Light

Hey! I'm new and I'm hoping very much that we can solve this together.

My check engine light comes on, stays on, and then turns off all the time. I never know when it will be there or not. My mechanic said it could be the converter, but I'm thinking it could be as easy as an O2 sensor. I do not know when the last time it got a tune up was. What do you think? Let me know what questions you need answered!

Welcome to the forum.

Need to get it scanned for DTCs. Most auto stores will do it for free. Let us know what you get.

Thanks!

Will do. If it helps, the ABS and parking brake lights are on, too.

fwiw in the week and a half ive had my suburban, my check engine light has come on and off a couple times. i didnt have my reader when it first came on, it went out before i got it but then it came back, with a P0420 catalyst efficiency below threshold. also has 2 codes in memory P0470 and P0471 system lean bank 1 and 2, but those didnt set off the light.
most likely its an o2 sensor starting to go.

Thanks! I was figuring it was a sensor for sure, but I still need to check.

i'd still get the codes before you throw parts at it, there are many many things that can cause a check engine light
