Default 2003 suburban LT gear selector

hey guys,

so my dads 03 suburban about a year had the speedometer stop working, so we sent it in to a guy on ebay who said he cleaned and replaced everything.

anyway about 6 months ago the gear selector indicator on the dash just above the mileage kind of went out, sometimes it will come on perfectly but 95% time it is too dim to even see what gear you are in.

yes the dimmer is on full and you still cant see it, so ive taken the cluster out and played with the wiring and it seems that it only brightens up when you pull the plug about half way out. so im wondering is this probably and electrical problem or could it be the guy never replaced that bulb and it is starting to fade?

thanks guys

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds more like a dirty/bad connector problem. Get some spray contact cleaner at Radio Shack or similar store.

tried that contact cleaner, didnt help. it seems to get better and worse depending on how you move the wires and the connector, but has no certain spot that makes it like new.

the odometer right below it works fine, so maybe its the wire and pin for the gear indicator?

sounds like a loose wire or pin.

Any place to see a wiring diagram and see what pin it is?

ok well i tried jiggling all the wires in the plug and again nothing worked unless you move the plug a certain way then it appears but slowly dims again.

so im thinking i might just have to replace the cluster?

Can you disassemble the cluster enuf to see what the connector is mounted on? If it's directly soldered to the printed circuit board, it may be a cracked solder joint which is an easy fix.
