2004 AC Not Cold - just cooling
Hello....2004 Z71 Tahoe @ 101,000 miles
About 30-45 days ago...Just prior to leaving home with my Wife in the 3rd row seat, we stopped at our gate to lock it and she saw about 1 cup of water come our of the grill near the tire hump.
About 14 days ago my entire AC (Front and Rear) is only getting to 59 degrees and when cycling up to 65 degrees. Temps read not moving and different RPM didn't matter.
I checked the low side pressure and it is about 20 psi. (Very poor gauge)
I am thinking maybe freezing-up-sticking expansion valve in rear of vehicle (explains water out of vent)???
Is it common on these trucks to have to add some freon at thie mileage/age?
Ideas????
Thanks

It is not common for the system to leak or seep over time.
Water draining out from around the front passenger tire area is normal; it is condensation coming off the evaporator core.
If you don't have a good set of gauges and experience with auto A/C systems it is unlikely that you will be able to repair this properly.

The water was not draining onto the ground but into the passenger area = My Wife's foot ---NOT NORMAL OPERATION
The drains are peeing properly
I put 1 can of freon in, per advice of Mr Goodwrench Friend- AC Tech-Driveline-blahblahblah, and this did bring the temp down nice to 39 degrees vs: 55 degrees
Yesterday...1 day after Freon addition, the cooling stopped for about 20 miles that I know of....Just hot air coming out. I turned the system off and drove on home. Later I went out and put my Low-Side gauge on and pressure was same as after Freon was added...System was cooling again.
Drove to work today, 55 miles, and it worked well.
Any ideas other than I can't fix it and neither can my friend with 25 yrs experience pro wrench?

If you would have told us that the leak was inside instead of making it sound like it was outside; that is an extremely easy problem to diagnose and repair and surely your “Mr. Goodwrench friend with 25 yrs experience” would know that it is a clogged evaporator core module assembly drain that normally allows moisture to drain outside by the pax side frnt wheel well but is clogged and overflowing inside the cabin.
As far as the poor cooling performance goes you either have a leak.
A bad high pressure switch
A bad low pressure switch
A bad compressor.
Contaminated Freon (a big possibility now that you opened the system without knowing what you're doing).
A faulty control head.
Clogged refrigerant filter. Faulty evaporator. Faulty Accumulator. The list is endless.
I'm sure as hell not the one “without a clue” there partner, if it were my Tahoe it would have been fixed already.

From my First message....."About 30-45 days ago...Just prior to leaving home with my Wife in the 3rd row seat, we stopped at our gate to lock it and she saw about 1 cup of water come our of the grill near the tire hump. "
Is there a grill near the tire hump OUTSIDE? Is there a tire hump OUTSIDE?
You are a F'n idiot and you keep going on.
If you wree so smart you would have simply said what is causing this problem.
Now you list most every part in the AC system on a vehicle that was operating well prior.
Contaminated freon....Opened the system...!!!!!
I can see little valuable info is available here since the big headed no it all has to blow his mouth.
Damn I just needed a little direction ....
Thank you Mr Mouth

Are you trying to hurt my feelings.
Are you trying to hurt my feelings.
You did attempt an answer however wron in that you have not read carefully what I wrote..."About 30-45 days ago...Just prior to leaving home with my Wife in the 3rd row seat, we stopped at our gate to lock it and she saw about 1 cup of water come our of the grill near the tire hump. "
Your answer refers to the front of truck??????????????????????????
3rd row seats are usually in the back....by the tire hump (wheel well)
Why didn't you just answer the question?
You are a dime a dozen in the world and about a nickel dozen on internet. Knows everything and the one asking question is stupid sowon't help them with an accurate answer.
Jesus man I need to fix my AC on my Tahoe
