2004 Chevy Tahoe A/C
Hello everyone. I have an 04 Chevy Tahoe, 4.8 Liter with 81,000 miles. At 50,000 miles I had the A/C compressor and condenser replaced by a reputable A/C mechanic but shortly thereafter it began having the same issues that have been discussed throughout the forums. Cold air for awhile then it would just start blowing hot air. I'd pull the truck over, shut off the engine and then restart and my a/c was back on again. Recently it just seemed like the air was getting weaker and weaker. Took it in to have the freon checked and recharged. Then it would work great in the mornings but after shutting off the engine 2 or 3 times throughout the day, the compressor won't kick in and all I get is warm to hot air. Took back to my original a/c guy and he said my rpm's at idle weren't high enough and compressor wouldn't engage. Cleaned throttle body. Worked for a day and then same thing. Took it back and had the Control Head unit replaced. Same thing. Just went out on me again this afternoon. What's the problem? Compressor bad again or is there a relay that's getting to hot and shutting off? I live in la Quinta, Ca. and it's 115 degrees today. I need help in a bad way.
Welcome to the forum.
If you had to get freon added after the compressor replacement, sounds like you've got a leak in the system.
Not sure what idle speed has to due w/ the compressor clutch engagement.

Thanks Shark. I'm just so frustrated now. The compressor was replaced about three years ago. Do you think the new one is going out now as well or just simply a leak? I agree with you about the idle speed but I told my wife that I needed a new air intake system and she bought it
. So i'm happy with that even though I have no air.

BigCan,
I have a 05 LT with auto climate control and work with a guy that has a 05 Burb with manual climate control.

Both of our systems had problems and both were fixed with a replacement of the climate control resister. With the auto temp AC, I used the "ACDelco 15-80567 Control Module" sold on Amazon for $63. For the manual control AC, I used the 7-wire harness receiving unit that was picked up at NAPA. That one sold for $67.<O

The replacement for this is an EASY DIY. 4 screws, two unclips and the old part is removed.<O

Details... Under the glove box, the black plastic kick-board for the AC unit is removed by 2 X 7mm (I think) screws. The control resister is of center right and right in front. It's removed with 2 X 5.5MM screws. The harness going into it is easy to unplug. The two wire harness that comes from the unit is a little harder to unclip because it is tucked in behind another part. I used a butter knife to release the tab. Once it's out, swap the parts. I'm no expert and it took me 10 minutes.<O

Good luck.
