Default 2004 k1500 front axle growl in 4wd

I have a real pronounced growling noise from the front end only when 4wd is engaged. Doesn't matter if hi or lo range. I found a TSB in Alldata for this noise but it describes noise as starting at 30mph and only in 2wd. Mine begins at approx 10mph and only 4wd. Anybody experienced this before?

Welcome to the forum.

Best guess - differential, CV joints, xfer case, or U-joints.

Default Noise

I have seen a whole lot of these where the Vent Hose goes onto the Diff Housing leak and the gears are run low on gear lube. Most of the time the side bearings go bad,and have seen some of the inner Pinion bearing run dry and mess the case halfs up.I believe the best thing is to remove the front diff and see whats inside.

That's my fear. Haven't rebuilt a differential yet and don't know that I want to start just now and on a friends'. That may be the thing to do though in the interest of $$$. Thanks for your info though.
