2005 Chevy Tahoe LS: Replacing the LED Center High-Mount Stop Light (CHMSL)
All,
I own a 2005 Chevy Tahoe LS (w/ a lift gate, not barn door type rear doors) and the Center High-Mount Stop Light (CHMSL) stopped working. I checked both fuses (regular break lights and the CHMSL are on two separate circuits) and they were good. I thought it was a simple bulb, but it is a LED array and is not sold in a parts store. When I priced it at the Chevy dealership (GM P/N 15170955), it was quoted at about $198! WHAT!!! I checked the salvage yard, but they did not have any. So, I checked eBay and they had one for $41.99 (After market P/N 1610331). Bought it on Monday, received it on Friday, and installed the next day!
Don’t let anyone fool you by saying the lights don't fit. Mine fit just fine. Here’s how simple it is to install:
Tools Needed:
(1) Phillip screw driver
(1) Flat screw driver
1) Lift the lift gate, not just the glass.
2) Once the lift gate is up, look at the top middle where the CHMSL is located. You will see two (2) Phillip screws on the bottom of the light assembly. Unscrew the two screws and keep them for reinstallation.
3) Remove the light from the body and you will notice that the wiring is tucked into the body. Be careful when pulling the wires out to make sure you do not damage the connectors.
4) Use a small flat screw driver and push in the clip that locks the connector. Remove the light from the wiring harness!
Perform these steps in reverse order and you will be done in about 5-8 minutes. It’s that simple and you can save about $150 dollars!!!

Did the same job on my 99 Blazer over here in the UK, got one from an ebay seller in the USA, cost less than I could get over here, including shipping. Easy job.
