Default 2005 Suburban 8.1L mileage

We are in the market for a used suburban or yukon xl that we only plan to seldom on vacations for pulling our trailer or long travels. I'd be surprised if put more than 3K to 4K miles per year.

I was able to find a 2005 Suburban 8.1l 4x4 with around 55K miles. Seems like a good deal for around $9K.

My problem is i can't find any valid info on the MPG. Can anyone provide? Also, any words of advice on this model with engine?

Thanks........

Welcome to the forum,
wow that is what a 496 cubic inch block...I'd guess the MPG is not something you worry about when buying that big of and engine.... highway I would speculate as best 16-17 city in the single digits..maybe 11mpg...

Hi,
I think the price of 9K for a 2005 with 55K is a great deal. I had a 2006 with 85 K and paid about 5 K more. As others have said mileage is not the vehicles strong point. I would say 11 MPG is about what you will get. That 16 -17 highway is BS. At least in my case with a stock engine and no mods. maybe in a downhill cruise control 200 mile stretch you could get 16. The info I give is basically from DIC. I could hand calculate it but I brought the truck to do what other vehicles cant.

The banker (my wife) denied the funds. She was very much against the 8.1 and wants the smaller 5.3 lliter. I'll prolly need to find an 02-03 to fit that price range of $9K.

thanks for your replies....

For someones future reference I filled the empty 2006 suburban 8.1 up today. It was really low I think the tank calls for 35 or 37 gallons.
@3.75 per gallon she took 34 gallons for a price of aprox137.00.

I drove aprox 70-80 MPH on interstate highways only (road trip). I was able to eek out 403 miles using 32.3 gallons of gas. I had an avg MPG of 12.5 and I was using a lead foot. If I had driven slower, I know I could have gone farther and would probably had a better MPG. This to me was real world highway driving and real world MPG. Engine is tuned with no mods. standard good tires too.

MPG all depends on the rear end gears, what are you running?

this is usually true unless you have an 8.1 liter engine up front!
