Default 2005 Tahoe Brake Overheat

I had the rear brakes done in June. The shop replaced the rotors and pads.
(The Tahoe is rarely used for long drives, usually less than 25 minutes one way.)

After some time went by, after a long drive, I smelled burning brake liner. The right rear wheel was hot. Took it back to the shop. The mech lubed the sliders with the more expensive lube.

Last night, I went for another long drive. Again, burning liner smell coming from the right rear. Wheel was hot. The other wheels were cool.

What's going on here? Did the shop screw something up? The mech says it's probably rusty, because we don't use the car often enough. We drive it maybe once or twice a week.

I'm wondering if the parking brake is dragging. I put the Tahoe on a slight incline in Neutral, and it rolls.

I'm going back to the shop in two days. I'm wondering if there's something they're not telling me. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

Bill

A brake shoe is hanging up - either a caliper or the parking brake drum. Gotta be one or the other. Tell the mechanic to make it right.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with intheburbs, likely a stuck caliper. Red flags went up as soon the mechanic said it was because you didn't drive it much and he replaced the rotors.

Could be a bad flex hose acting like a check valve and not allowing that caliper to release.

there is only one flex hose to the rear that feeds both calipers

So, I dropped off the Tahoe last night to be worked on today. They believe that, when they changed the rotor, they knocked the spring loose on the parking brake, causing it to just slightly drag. I'm going over to pick it up now. The problem is, I'll have to wait for a long drive to see if it's fixed. We seldom go on long drives. (Just when there's animals to be rescued.)

Thanks for all your help!

You can always stick a jack under it and spin the wheel. Make sure it spins freely and consistently.

If you're not sure, jack up the other side and spin it for a comparison.

I think they owe you a new rotor and pads too!
