Default 2006 Chevy Tahoe - Parking Brake Pedal (not the cable)

Wife pushed the pedal to the floor on our 2006 Tahoe and when it released, the pedal did not come back up. The warning indicator continues to DING but the brake is not engaged. I got under the dash and saw that the pedal will go down, and if I pull on the release lever, I can lift the pedal to its starting position.

It appears that the pedal is not engaging the brake. It is a lot harder to get to than some of the videos I've seen may lead me to believe. Is there a way to re-engage the spring or does a whole assembly need to be purchased?

Any links to repair diagrams / videos would be appreciated as well. So far, nothing I can find has all of the components in the same spot so I don't want to mess around with it all too much.

thanks,

With the pedal down, does the e brake work? If so the cable is intact. Do you feel normal resistance pushing pedal down? I ask these questions to differentiate between a broken cable vs spring (if one even exists somewhere on assembly).

there is little resistance when pushing the pedal down. Also, when the pedal is all of the way down, it does not return to the starting position when I pull the lever. I have to pull the lever and then pull the pedal back up.

Check the brake actuator lever where the cable hooks up at the rear wheels. Use a hammer and punch to drive them toward the rear of the vehicle if necessary. They often rust and stick without fully releasing.
