I first used a disabling device to turn mine off just to see if it was worth it keeping oil consumption in mind. After two oil changes and no more consumption issues I used HP Tuner software to log into the ECU and disabled the AFM. A GM tech can turn it off using whatever programmer they use. It will cost you whatever labor rate they have and unless your out of warranty it may be hard to find one who will do it? Best bet is to find someone in your area that has HP Tuner software and see if he will crack your ECM. It will cost $100 for them to get access to your specific ECM but it was worth imho.
Aftermarket I have no doubts but I seriously doubt its an option through the GM system, otherwise it wouldn't be standard equipment. I'll have to look into that now for curiosity.

There are people who have posted that select dealers have disabled the AFM and the fee is whatever the shop labor rate is. Once it gets turned off, it's permanent at least until someone gets back in the ECU to turn it back on. If you want a more mechanical solution, a simple cam and lifter swap using non AFM/DOD lifters is the way to go albeit a more costly one.
Disabling mine has caused a mileage decrease but in my mind it's not significant enough to go back to consuming oil. I also have an after market exhaust and when running on 4 cylinders the truck sounded like one of those imports with a fart can exhaust. In the end I'm happy with it after tuning on it and ultimately that's what's most important.
BTW, I initially disabled the AFM on my truck using the Range AFM Disabler and I still have it. It plugs into your OBDII port. If your interested PM me and I'll make you a good deal. At least this way you can try it out and see if it's for you or not?

The Range AFM disable is what I used to disable the AFM function, it plugs directly into the datalink connector...
It works, there is a minimal amount of reduction in MPG, my oil consumption did reduce but then returned slightly but I believe its due to needing the valve cover PCV replaced.
I have installed a catch can to see what is by-passing the valve cover.
