Welcome to the forum.

If the terminals are hot, then they must be loose. Make sure they're clean and tite.

Most auto parts stores will test the battery, charging system, and starter for free.

Was the old battery the original one?

I would also add that if you live in a humid or salty environment, the cables may be internally corroded. The corrosion can also cause high resistance,
But like 73shark suggested I would suspect loose connections...
Check at the battery + to starter, battery + to fuse box, battery + to the alternator, battery - to engine block and the ground strap from engine to body and also that the alternators mounting bolts are clean, corrosion free and properly tighten...
