It just blows my mind that this has been going on since they started the AFM with the 5.3's and you would think after more than 10 years they could figure it out.

Honestly, the AFM is a JOKE! Once in V4 mode, the slightest touch on the accelerator pedal returns the engine to all 8 cylinders. Maybe it's different for the 2021 models but all the AFM motors I have driven only work in basically a coast mode.

Totally Agree.. my 5.3 07 had 1 seized lifter at 130k... fix it and wait for one of the other 7 to seive as well... HELL NO ! I did an AFM delete, new cam solid lifters, reprogram the computer. RESULTS - Same fuel mileage, more responsive, more power! go figure

GM acknowledged problem with in-stock lifters and had all service depts send back stock of 'bad' batch. From reading and watching some videos from seasoned mechanics, I feel certain engines were assembled with poor quality lifters, GM has realized this, pulled the parts and are now advising service depts to replace ALL lifters with quality stock to avoid additional occurrence of this issue. I just picked up Suburban yesterday from this third go around and the service mgr told me "This engine has been repaired three times now. If I were you, I'd contact GM about this." I told him we already had an open case since the first incident.

I feel that this will be the last time I have this problem as all lifters are now the 'good' ones. So I feel GM won't give me new engine OR take this car back. (We bought in MD, live in NC and don't yet qualify for the lemon law). BUT I'M GOING TO DEMAND AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IF NOTHING ELSE!!! The thing is..... I REALLY love this car!!!! I just want to be able to rely on it and have it be dependable!
I am in the same boat on how I feel about this. I love my 2021 Tahoe but need it to be reliable. I just don’t have much faith in the model, even when I eventually get it back. Ours is in the shop for the 2nd time, currently waiting on a complete set of new lifters. They have not torn down the engine yet to be able to determine whether there is any additional damage (and whether a replacement engine is necessary), as they are waiting on the back-ordered new lifters first. No one can estimate when those will arrive (“could be two days or two weeks”), at which time I might be looking at a wait for what is likely a back-ordered replacement engine.

A replacement engine is the only way I would agree to keep this vehicle, as I cannot be convinced that running it with bad lifters for 2000-3000 miles after they became symptomatic did not cause damage to other parts of the engine, which could easily manifest themselves anytime, including after my warranties lapse.

This is a crazy time for this to be happening, as there are no loaners and virtually no rental cars available right now.

I’m surprised that you haven’t exceeded the lemon law requirements. I guess Maryland has some tough requirements. In NC, it’s 4 trips for the same issue or over 20 days loss of use within a year due to being in the shop. It sounds like you’ve likely passed those marks but maybe not in MD.

If I were you, I’d trade yours in now while it’s “fixed” and while used cars are selling at a premium. You can in good faith represent that it’s “fine” (as you’ve been told) and either (1) get one manufactured after 3/31/21 (allegedly the date the lifter supplier changed) or (2) buy a full size SUV from another manufacturer. As much as I like my Tahoe when it works, I plan to do (2) when I get mine back, because I’ll never be able to trust that it was fixed.

Default Me too

Have a 2021 1500 AT4. Bent pushrod at 9,000 miles, dealer replaced all lifters on that side of the engine. Today, at about 15,000 miles, engine light came on, took it to dealer, and they are going to replace the other side lifters. If it is worse then just a lifter swap then they said they will replace engine. Sad, as this is my first ever truck and GMC/Chevy. Makes me regret this large purchase, and totally lost confidence in this vehicle. Will share any more details I can get from the dealer. Sadly, no loaner or rentals available, so I rode my bike home 17miles in 100 degree heat. Terrible from a customer experience standpoint.

This can’t happen every 7-10k miles can it?! Lord have mercy.

attaching a photo of the first bent pushrod for reference.

We drove the Tahoe to Woody Folsom’s on May 21, 2021 to get the needed repairs. We were called on June 4, 2021 to inform us our vehicle was repaired and ready for us to pick up. We drove 40 miles to Woody Folsom’s to pick up our Tahoe and didn’t make it out of the parking lot without noticing that it was not repaired correctly. The engine light came on along with a service esc, traction control and a collision control lights came on. The truck also has a vibration. All of this was noticed in the parking lot of the dealership. No lights were on when we dropped it off. It’s almost as if they made no effort to make sure our vehicle was truly ready to be picked up. Why would you not drive a vehicle that is under warranty to make sure the necessary repairs were made? The vehicle may be in worse condition after having the repairs done. Motor issues and 3 recalls makes me question General Motors integrity and dependability. I’m beginning to wonder if we have a purchased a lemon. This Tahoe is my wife and 3 kids primary transportation to work and school. I work out of town a lot and shouldn’t have to worry if our brand new Tahoe is going to be reliable and get them to where they need to be. My wife and I are at a crossroads of how to proceed with this. I am beginning to think that we should have the dealership buy it back or hope that it tears up within the Lemon Law guidelines. We want this resolved!! We are beyond frustrated!!
It's hard to rely on cars lately. The problem is especially relevant for children who live far from school. It is convenient that now there is distance learning, but this will not replace the child's communication with peers

Update 8/6:
Still no acceptable resolution for my request to replace other 8 defective lifters.(I had 8 replaced when the truck broke down in June.) Also, no resolution on getting my warranty extended. After these requests were denied I continue to call GM to ask for updates, I finally got a call back from them on Aug. 5 saying that they're discussing my request again with their supervisors and the dealership. While talking to the representative(Damian) I did mention that I was a member of this forum and was keeping this group updated on my case. Not sure if that will help but at least I let GM know that they weren't dealing with me as an isolated customer. Anyway, Damian said he would call me back next Tuesday with an update.....I'll let the group know if he really does and the outcome.

UPDATE:
Drove away 2 weeks ago with all new lifters (16 of them). Was again out of town for work, sitting in a parking lot with engine running for about 20 min. Engine started to feel kind of sputtery so I turned it off. Five min later started it to drive away and continued with sputtery feel, misfiring, ESC, Traction Control and Check Engine light came on. Ended up getting it towed from Raleigh to CLT, NC. That was Wednesday at noon and now, Friday evening, they still haven't looked at it. We are totally, completely done with this car! It makes me soooooo sad that Chevrolet made this beautiful, smooth, comfortable car but put a piece of junk engine in it!! We've spoken and emailed the dealership where we bought it (first time we've contacted them about this as we bought in MD), have emailed GM yet again and are now looking into a lawyer. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT AFTER ALL 16 LIFTERS BEING REPLACED WE'D BE GOOD!!! But now I just am going to work on our lemon law and getting every dime back from this car's purchase. Then, I'll get a 2023 Toyota Sequoia. Our GM days are completely over!!!!!!!

Darn, that's not good at all!!! Sorry to hear this since I was hoping replacing all the bad lifters would resolve this issue. Good luck with moving forward on the lemon law and please keep us updated on your progress. I would really be interested in what advice the lawyer gives you on this situation. As my update indicates, I'm working on getting the other 8 bad lifters replaced and my warranty extended. I probably will end up in your position with the lemon law track though.
I'm about to be a Toyota customer as well:-).

Here's an interesting article I found last night.......

https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/08...omment-1348325

I paid close attention to this particular paragraph:

If the customer has experienced prior valve lifter failures, dealers can choose one of three options: replace one bank of lifters and offer the customer a 60-month, 100,000-mile Powertrain Component Coverage Letter, replace the entire engine, or reach out to the District Manager of Aftersales for further guidance. The solutions are similar for a customer that has experienced valve lifter issues in the past and had one bank of lifters replaced. In this case, the dealer can replace one bank of lifters and offer a 60-month, 100,000-mile Powertrain Component Coverage Letter or reach out to the District Manager of Aftersales.

NONE OF THESE OPTIONS were even mentioned to us during any one of our many visits to the dealers for lifter replacement!! Looks like an extended warranty is on the table! GO for it people!!!

I joined the bad lifters club on June 27 at 6800 miles! and its been in the dealership since June 29. I already have an open case with GM and I make sure to call them at least two times per week. So far they told me they are replacing the lifters and push roads oh! also the coolant? ( lol )

I went to the dealership today and they told me they are just missing one part and that they will have ETA of shipment on Wednesday. Still they don't know how long will it take them to rebuild the whole thing. Reading everything that's happening here I don't trust my vehicle anymore. In Mexico we don't have a exactly a lemon law, but we do have some government agencies that might be able to help ( PROFECO) I'm gathering all the requirements and papers and I'm going there tomorrow!

I'm not sure how far can things go, but I would settle for a new engine.

let you guys know.

Hello again you wonderful people from the internet! we got out truck back on on July 23, they called us and told us to pick up the truck out of the blue 15 minutes before closing the shop so it was very weird for us but we went! they told us that they replaced all the lifters so we were happy of getting our truck back! as we got on the truck we realized we didn't have any more gas left in the tank? we left it full! (lol)

so we drove our truck for approximately for 600 miles and it finally broke down again on the 4th of august ( same issues sputtering engine, kicking and all TC and engine lights on) we left it there and we haven't moved it yet. tomorrow we are calling the GM road assistance thingy and get out truck back to the dealership where they fixed it.

let's see what they will say now, but from what I can see in this forum there's no escape to this curse.

I will let you guys know what happens after!
