Default 84 Suburban 454 / Advice

Hey everyone. Was wondering if i could get some advice/general comments from anyone. My aunt in Seattle has a 84 Suburban w/ 454 approx 74K miles. It has basically been used for smaller trips to the store and back its whole life. She is looking to sell it to me for $2000. I would have to fly up to Seattle and drive back down to Los Angeles.

I have a family of my own (2 small boys and my wife) and we currently have one car that we use for everything. Looking to add a second but not sure if the Suburban should be the "car". Not sure if i should look into spending a bit more and buying something newer. I love this truck though so if it makes sense than why not, right?

Has there been any dependability issues or any other concerns I should take into consideration before making a decision to buy besides the obvious... which to me is the gas mileage.

Thanks for your time.

the only downsides I remember to that era was something about stamped gears in the 700r4 transmissions... seems they failed somewhat often, but as long as your not towing alot or rough on it, they seem to do fine. of course this is assuming that it's got the 700r4 vs a th400. if it's got the th400 it's pretty much bulletproof but won't do any favors in regards to fuel mileage.

otherwise the trucks are pretty solid, parts should be plentyful and cheap, and you'll have tons of room.

You should never use gas mileage and a 454 truck in the same sentence.

73shark - haha... point taken.

hick - Appreciate the comments. Not sure about the transmission but will check, thanks. Wont be using for towing so should be good regardless.

I look forward to being apart of the Suburban Fam!!

Great truck! You wont have any serious problems with this thing. Almost everything you do have will be age related and not usually mechanical.
