Question 95 Tahoe 350 DCM6 by ATK (wrong engine?)

First let me say 'hello' to all the people who have actual mechanical skills...
I just tried 'search' for a few hours but can not find my problem. Here it is.

A good friend of mine (sitbull) has a 1995 Tahoe LS that ate it's motor at around 550,000 miles.
(edit: ok, I was off by 420,00 miles, typo)

Very unhappy with his mechanic who had just done oil system work,
and the fact that a massive oil leak caused the self-destruct, he asked a friend's son to replace the engine.

Well.... He put in a 305 instead of a 350, Seems 305's don't like being told what to do by a 350's computer module.

I bought a DCM6 5.7 (K) from the retail outlet of ATK (gearhead) and we took the Tahoe to an experienced mechanic and the 'long block' was delivered soon after. We also recovered parts from the 350 and delivered the intake manifold, throttle body and distributor.

Now my problem (other than being mechanically illiterate):

One of the assistant mechanics (ie: younger) called Friday and said the engine was an 'off-road' engine as there was no place on the long block to attach emissions bits.... He cited the tag on the engine that said 'no-smog'.

I was under the impression that the smog stuff attached to the manifold?

Did I get the wrong engine? Or is Chris talking out of his sphincter?

Per the website... what they sent.

<snip> Edit: I realize now that those pics were no help

Thank you, Thomas.

These two ports on the manifold (The small ones, #3 and #4)

Don't have matching ports on the block

Are these necessary for emissions controls or just special smog ports?
What happens with that manifold on that block?

Thanks, Thomas.

Looks to me like those 2 ports go to the EGR valve on the intake. My 95 has an 880 block casting.

agree that it looks like EGR... but how do the gasses get there?
There are no corresponding ports in the head, do they just seep between the head, manifold?

Are you saying that on the old motor there were no matching ports?
If that the case then maybe the correct gasket leaves an air gap.

I think that's it, On a parts site I found this 350 gasket:

On the top gasket there is a small 'cut-out' that seems to correspond to the 2 ports. 'By George, I think she's got it!'

Thanks, Thomas
