97 burb front end "DEATH WOBBLE"
At around 40 mph. AND on rough rough or bumps, I get the DEATH WOBBLE. stearing wheel goes crazy side to side. Took it in and had wheels balanced. Replaced front shocks, as I think they were the originals. Took it to my local repair shop and they say pitman arm and idler arm. I priced out the parts at Checker auto and each one is under 40 bucks. The repair shop wants 110 bucks for each part PLUS 1.25 hours labor at 70 bucks an hour. I know where these parts are locared on the vehicle. I have a puller. Is this something that I could do my self??? Seems simple...two nuts on each and pop it out and in with a new one....OR do I just get raped and pay to have it done?
First, I'm not sure what the shop wants is being "raped". You can do the job with pullers, patience, and really big sockets. The pitman arm will probably requre a 3/4" drive set. Be ready for some fussin' and cussin'. Then you still have to do the alignment.
Me, I'd pick a shop I trust and pay the $320. My time and knuckles are worth more than that. But there was a time when I would (and did) do it myself.
Regards,
David
